When painting an animal or human subject, a primary concern is to establish an expression on the subject's face. I hope that this will communicate to the viewer a sense of what the subject is thinking or feeling. While the face is of particular interest to me, I am fascinated by the other elements of the picture; clothing, objects, and surroundings. This fascination carries over into my still life work. <br>There are many painters whose work I admire. I love the visible brushwork of Velasquez, Gainsborough and Sargent, however I am also in awe of the smooth, clear techniques of Ingres and Bouguereau. In my own work I am happiest when I feel that I've created an engaging picture in which the application of paint is of interest in its' own right.
