Steves Artist Statement:

We need gateways to something greater then ourselves. Art works for me. All art is in some way autobiographical, my work is in a sense a story about me. I was inspired by a gifted artist mother who shared her passion. She constantly took us to museums encouraging me continually, even showing art work together, it was a large part of our relationship. This was the start to feeling of something bigger then myself.
Understand there are voices out their that without creative forms of expression we just can’t quite hear. This is how and were I fit in. Sometimes one’s material and concept work together within a longstanding traditions, other time they don’t; largely because I am fascinated by the relationship of Nature to Manmade objects which can often be conflicting . For me, my painting and my forged jewelry are ways I can engage this environment, through line, texture, and color (despite being colorblind). Both of these medium constantly require me to expand my skills through experimentation. I enjoy the conflict between the flatness of a watercolor, and the three dimensional forged jewelry . Yes, I like visually stimulating projects. They are great reminders that we may have forgotten our allegiance to personal truths, things like loyalty, trust….. most importantly loyalty to the self .
He is well known for his unusual “Donkey” watercolors, which have sold worldwide are solid examples of the metaphor of loyalty, trust, and service. In his landscapes he try’s to establish links between the reality of the seen and that imagined by Stephen. Typically it’s the same “feeling” as if your are driving past a beautiful landscape at sixty mph you get the intense feeling but not necessarily the details. His works almost never shows the complete structure. This results in the fact that the artist can easily imagine an own an interpretation without being hindered by reality. With a subtle minimalistic approach, he creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer.
His works, particularly his jewelry doesn’t always reference recognizable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted, and possible interpretations becomes endless.
Stephen Teichman currently lives and works in Kennett Square, pennsylvania with his talented partner and three dogs.
