PATRICIA MAHONEY - CERAMICS
After taking a tile/mosaic course in 2006 to make translucent porcelain tiles to use in stained glass windows, I became hooked on porcelain clay, soon stoneware, and then Raku clays. Alternative firing quickly became a love of mine. Completely absorbed by the range of techniques that can be used and still experience serendipitous results from each process, every Raku piece I make is hand-built, glazed, hand-pulled from the fire and then reduced, or oxidized, in a sand pit or can to produce varying results in the glazes. I continuously experiment with under and over glazes, masking, sgraffito, photo silkscreen, and mixed media. Sometimes I introduce natural forms like bark, tree limbs, nuts, plus found objects, wires, plastic and glass. I enjoy the interplay of light in, around and going through my pieces with natural and modern themes. Many times I work with the idea of groups of pieces that are ”similar, but different.” They can be placed together or mixed and matched with another group of pieces. My work moves back and forth between sculptural and functional pieces. A recent pursuit of mine is wood-firing, a high-fire process which produces earth tones. Regardless of the process, each hand crafted item I make is an individual, like you!
