Matthew Wren
Ceramics
I have been the Ceramics Studio Supervisor at Historic Yellow Springs since 2015 and have always relied on community studios for the time, space, equipment, materials, and kilns to create my work. I see our studio as a place for reciprocity of skills and ideas as it pertains to clay, but also to community. I recycle the studio scrap clay to use in my work, and make glaze with the ash from our wood-fired kiln. When making, I am most absorbed in the physical, gestural marks through clay, and the anatomy of lines circling the pot. Each motif allows me to express the personal in universal terms referencing family/community/society, art, or nature. My work is made of stoneware, gas reduction fired to 2350 F.
