As a potter, I am drawn to the wonders of nature and the environment I live. I celebrate what I love in pottery-making. I am always ready to explore new forms, research glazes and survey the many textures that surround me.
For the last decade I have been researching and creating the forms of seashells. They fascinate me with their body whorls, varied apertures, outer lip, ribs and spires. The hard skelton grows as the animal inside grows its hard shell to house its soft body. Truly a wonder of nature.
Calling attention to the environment in which seashells are abundant I am moved to respect the oceans of the world and their inhabitants. I can make a difference if only by making one seashell at a time. They are a reminder that nothing last forever and we must take care of the things we cherish.
Functional pottery is a mainstay of my work. Pure white porcelain with its smooth texture are like a blank canvas where I can layer my colors. Lately, I have changed my canvas to include sun on a cloudy day and dark, dark nights. Exploring a new framework to move my pottery from functional to decorative is where I am headed for 2022!
