Emerging from the Caribbean tropics, the artistic life of Henry Bermudez has been an unexpected intermingling of ideas informed by an acute sensitivity to the past, and stenciled as part of his personal inventory onto places where he has lived and made his artistic working territory.
Trained at Venezuela's National School of Art and further honing his skills at Mexico City's "La Esmeralda" on scholarship, Bermudez's work gained international acclaim when he represented Venezuela at the 1986 Venice Biennale. His art resides in prestigious institutions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Neuberger Museum of Art in New York, the Modern Art Museum of Mexico and in prominent collections in Caracas, Venezuela.
Bermudez’ work has received grant support from the Bader Fund, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and found a wider audience through Philagrafika's international printmaking. Furthermore, was a Peter Benoliel Fellow from CFEVA in Philadelphia. He currently has a 20-year retrospective at The Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia. Dual roles as an educator at CADI and Fleisher Art Memorial reflects his commitment to mentorship. Prior to disruptions caused by the pandemic, he played a key part in Fishtown's cultural scene as co-director of HouseGallery. Continuing to evolve his practice, he now splits his time between teaching and contributing to exhibitions across various venues.
