I'm an urban landscape painter who prefers to paint gritty back alleys and rundown row homes. My work is messy, and drippy, and imperfect.
I work mostly in oil on top of newspaper covered canvas for lots of reasons, but mostly because I like the noise and chatter the layer of newspaper creates in the background.
Much like the cities I paint.
I paint what I see and try not to edit out the things that may be considered unnecessary or unsightly. Instead, I highlight the phone wires, and the garbage cans, and even the old mattresses on the curb.
I find a real freedom just letting things be what they are.
