Cary Galbraith
Painting
I am a representational oil painter. I was born and raised in New Rochelle, NY. My father was an artist and advertising executive who had a strong influence on me and my art.
My work is contemporary realism. I was trained in the tradition of painting from life. I paint what I see, building my paintings from monochromatic to vivid color and contrast.
Recently I have developed the practice of painting sailboats. I grew up sailing on Long Island Sound. The wonder of moving through the water by the power of the wind amazes me. My focus is to portray the excitement, the energy, and the atmosphere.
The practice of painting is in finding the solution. Delacroix said, “The art of painting is to attract attention only to what is necessary.” I aim to simplify the complicated and to be happy by leaving some things undone.
My education includes Philadelphia College of Art, New York Phoenix School of Design and PAFA, receiving my certificate in 1976. I have had the honor of studying under Nelson Shanks at The Art Students League, NYC as well as with his instructors, Steve Early, Kerry Dunn, Lea Colie Wight and Natalie Italiano at Studio Incamminati, Philadelphia.
