Floral Oil Painting Demo

Instructor

Kim Myers Smith

Kim Smith is most at home standing at the easel, brush in hand, as morning light floods her studio. Years ago, while juggling a business and raising a family, she discovered that the quiet hours before dawn were her secret superpower — a magical pocket of time to paint that quickly became a joyful daily rhythm she can't imagine living without. Inspired by the lush countryside around her, Kim finds ideas everywhere: a farmers market bouquet, a quirky backyard bird, a plate of sweet treats on the counter. With a background in commercial art, her style blends intention with intuition — vibrant color, clean compositions, and the buttery magic of oil paint. She's equally passionate about sharing the journey, believing creativity doesn't wait for the perfect moment — it blooms the second you give yourself permission to just begin. Her goal? To create little bits of happiness every day and spread joy, peace, and a hint of whimsy to hearts around the world.

About the Demonstration

Florals have a way of capturing the heart, and on Sunday, Kim Smith of Kim Smith Fine Art will show you how she brings them to life using her signature layered oil painting technique — one that's as joyful and expressive as the flowers themselves. Kim will open with a transparent underpainting, washing in the soft, luminous tones that form the soul of the piece. Next come the pigment sticks — a favorite tool of Kim's for loosening up the composition, adding texture, and leaning into the wonderfully wild "messy middle" that she believes is where a painting truly finds its character. From there, Kim works with opaque oil paints to bring it all home — defining petals, playing with light and shadow, and coaxing the floral subject into a finished piece that feels both fresh and alive. Her approach is warm, approachable, and deeply encouraging, reminding us all that the most beautiful paintings often come from the courage to embrace imperfection along the way. This is a demonstration for dreamers, creators, and anyone who has ever been moved by a beautiful flower. Come spend your Sunday morning with Kim and leave with a whole new way of seeing — and maybe a little paint inspiration of your own!
