My name is Ishaq Deis and I’ve made thousands of pieces of art ever since I was very young. Most children like to make art (I’ve met only two that do not care to make art so much) and the only difference between me and other people is that I never stopped making art even though many people eventually do not continue to make art at a certain point in their life. So I’ve had lots of practice! I always say the same thing about myself as a creator as the great musician Billy Preston said about himself: ”I may not be the best….but I’m surely not…..the worst!”
About the Demonstration
I learned how to create yarn paintings after being given a gift that was made by a Wixàrika artist. The Wixàrika people of Mexico create brightly colored images utilizing a unique method. The artist puts yarn onto a wood panel and it is held in place by beeswax. The subject matter of a Wixàrika yarn painting involves images that relate to the Wixàrika peoples’ religion. I found the look and texture of the yarn on the wood surface enthralling, and so I started to make my own yarn paintings with my own subject matter. And instead of getting the yarn to stick to the wood with beeswax, I use ordinary white glue that is available even at the super market. I’ve learned a few useful techniques that help in the making of yarn painting and I’ll show everybody what I know at my demonstration!
