I work on real eggshells using beeswax and dye. The designs are written by hand with wax, which resists the dye and keeps those areas exactly as they are. The egg is dyed, more wax is added, then it's dyed again. This continues until I decide it's done.
The color sinks into the eggshell (I don't use paint), which means mistakes are permanent and confidence is helpful.
I use eggs from several species: quail, pheasant, Guinea hen, chicken, duck, goose, emu, and ostrich. Size and shape matter because each shell behaves differently and none of them take instructions.
The process comes from traditional pysanky, but the choices are contemporary: colo, scale, and composition. Every piece is made entirely by hand, with beeswax, dye, and a surprising amount of problem solving with a dash of perseverance. No two are the same, even when I try.
