Harriet Hill
Painting
I’m intense, and so is my art.
I distill details.
My artwork is bold, bright, filled with basic shapes, which are the building blocks of everything we see.
I spent 18 years living in Africa and its earthiness, saturation, designs and rhythms shaped me.
While in Africa, I helped people value their identity. Now I’m doing this for myself.
I use oil and cold wax in thick layers, smoothed to a silky finish with a palette knife. I start with color, then find the shapes, and when everything is in balance, I build the layers.
I know it’s done when it shouts at me.
