Working from both memory and direct observation, I focus on points of transformation in nature. These points are visual representations of inner transformation.
Whether representational or abstract, I find myself painting thresholds and potentiality, spaces that anchor us in the present moment, while denoting change and possibility. Where a forest meets a field, land meets water, or inner transformation creates an outer shift, these are all focal points for my work.
Whenever possible, I work directly outside in plein air style for both my abstract and representational works. This allows me to see subtle changes in light and form throughout the day and observe directly from the landscape. I seek to convey the simultaneous emotions of peace and elation that I experience as the undercurrent of nature.
I am particularly excited by the power of color to provoke an emotional response and am always seeking to incorporate evocative and subtle color elements in my work. I work in several mediums including oil paints and watercolors.
My watercolors are often quicker works that I often paint intuitively without any planned outcome. With oil painting my process often involves choosing a color palette as a starting point, mixing color, and considering composition and light. From that point I allow the painting to manifest. My work has also been called a conversation between structure and freedom.
I am a visual artist because it allows me to go within to express beauty and movement beyond thought. Often my abstract works are inspired from direct experience, observing life but referencing the formless. That at least, is the goal and anchoring point.
I have found that painting nature with reverence has become a personal reflection with the potential to nourish both myself as well as the viewer.
